Biography

Hubert Schmalix

Hubert Schmalix was born 1952 in Graz, Austria. He studied painting on the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Maximilan Melcher. His early work is formed by intensive colours and expressionist brushstrokes. After a long stay at the Philippines the female nude entered his body of work as dominant motif. In the 1980’s he gained fame as one of the most important representatives of the “Neue Malerei” respectively the “Neuen Wilden” along with Siegfried Anzinger, Erwin Bohatsch, Herbert Brandl, Gunter Damisch and others. His attendance at the Biennale of Venice in 1980 brought the first international success. In the course of the years Schmalix performs an artistic transformation from expressive wild to calm and reluctant with strong contours and distinctive internal forms. 1987 he moves to Los Angeles. Besides female nudes he increasingly consecrated himself to landscapes and still-lifes. From 1999 to 2006 Hubert Schmalix works as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

Works by the artist who lives and works in Los Angeles and Vienna were and are shown in exhibitions worldwide.
