Biography
Peter Sandbichler, born in Kufstein, attended the technical school for wood and stone sculpture in Innsbruck. He then studied for a year at the Art Students League in New York, from 1984 to 1986 with Wander Bertoni at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and from 1986 to 1991 with Bruno Gironcoli at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. At the beginning of the 1990s, his path led him to Frankfurt to study at the Institute for New Media under Professor Peter Weibel. Since then, the artist has lived and worked in Vienna and is active in the fields of sculpture, media art and installations. His diverse work is regularly presented at exhibitions in Austria and abroad. In 1995 he exhibited together with Coop Himmelblau, Peter Kogler, Richard Kriesche, Constanze Rum, Eva Schlegel and Ruth Schnell in the Austrian Pavilion curated by Peter Weibel at the Venice Biennale. Since then, his works have been exhibited at the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg, the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, several times at the mumok in Vienna, the fotomuseum Winterthur, the LABoral Centro de Arte in Gijón, the Galerie im Taxispalais in Innsbruck and numerous renowned galleries.
Sandbichler expands the concept of sculpture in the direction of painting, photography, architecture and media art. At the same time, he places his works in a socio-political context. Themes such as war, violence and the environment play a role in his oeuvre and smoulder beneath the aesthetic surfaces, wrapped in the beauty of abstract geometric forms. He thus succeeds in combining “sculptural aesthetics” with a “concrete socio-political statement”¹.
