Biography
Born in Linz in 1950, anselm glück made a name for himself as an artist and author in the late 1970s. He always pursued his individual distinctive style, which through its poetic language of shapes and signs echoes Jean Dubuffet and “outsider art” (French: art brut). Since 1984 the artist has mainly been painting with acrylic on canvas, because its fast-drying properties suit his working pace best. This is important, because glück’s creative process is in the truest sense of the word “multilayered”. First, a white canvas is “primed” with different colours using purely gestural brushwork. Then, the painter gradually creates a unique pictorial world, populated by his characteristic figures. anselm glück works according to the principle “the painting does what it wants”. There is therefore neither a fixed plan nor a predefined idea that the artist puts onto the canvas – the creative act takes place at the moment of painting. Finally, transparently applied white, grey and black acrylic layers allow the figures to achieve their final form. At the same time, the preceding creative stages shine through with varying degrees of intensity.
