Biography

Walter Bosse was born in Vienna in 1904 as the child of academic painters. In 1914, the family moved to Abbazia, but had to flee to their summer home in Kufstein due to the outbreak of the First World War. After the war, Walter Bosse went to the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he studied under Michael Powolny and Franz Cizek. After completing his training and then spending a year studying at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts, Walter Bosse opened his first ceramics studio in Kufstein in 1924. A number of well-known companies, including Augarten and Goldscheider, bought designs from him at this time or had them made directly in Kufstein. After the artist had to close his first ceramics factory in Kufstein in 1936 due to the general economic turmoil, he moved to Vienna in 1938, where he first founded the company Bosse-Keramik and then Terra in 1947. However, Walter Bosse was never able to fully recover economically and finally died impoverished in Iserlohn (Germany) in 1966 after a second bankruptcy and several lawsuits.
