Biography

Idowu Oluwaseun

Idowu Oluwaseun was born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1982. He began his studies at the Yaba College of Technology and at the School of Art Design and Printing in his native Lagos. The artist then moved to Germany, where he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Tal R from 2007 and in Rita McBride's master class from 2009 to 2013. Today, the artist lives and works in Houston, Texas.
In addition to exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Houston, his pictures were also on view at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. At the beginning of March 2021, the artist was represented with works in the exhibition "BLACK VOICES: Friend of My Mind" at the Ross Sutton Gallery in New York, 2022 in "A Coloured Story" at GNYP Gallery in Berlin. In spring 2023, the Nicodim Gallery in Los Angeles will dedicate a solo show to him. Until mid-April 2023, pictures by the artist can be seen in the exhibition "Sisters & Brothers" at the Kunsthalle Tübingen.

Idowu Oluwaseun belongs to the younger generation of African artists who are now attracting enormous attention within the international art scene and whose works are sought after by collectors worldwide. His hyper-realistic images quite intensely tell the story of African culture and the awakening consciousness of the continent. However, his figures are “faceless”: precious fabrics and lace cloths cover the eyes and noses of the sitters. Thus, these veiled portraits become an impressive metaphor for the lack of recognition of this "FACELESS MINORITY" (Idowu Oluwaseun).
