Biography

Jürgen Paas

Jürgen Paas was born in Krefeld in 1958. After studying from 1982 to 1987 at the Folkwang University of the Arts with László Lakner, Rudolf Vombeck and Franz Rudolf Knubel, he completed his training at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts with Jan Voss in Paris. From 1995 to 2002 he had a teaching position for pictorial experiments at his Alma Mater in Folkwang, then a teaching position for painting at the Institute for Art and its Didactics at the University of Dortmund and from 2002/2003 a professorship for painting at the Institute for Art and Art Theory at the University of Cologne.
In addition to other scholarships, his work has also been recognized with various awards. His works can be found in numerous museums such as the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven, the Staatliche Kunstsammlung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, the Städtische Sammlung Erlangen, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the Kunstmuseen Krefeld and the Kunstsammlung der Stadt Mainz as well as in other German and international collections. Jürgen Paas lives and works in Essen.
In the Jukebox series, the artist uses prefabricated PVC strips in a wide variety of colors, which are normally used in the furniture industry. But the name of the series already refers to another level that goes beyond the formal. A "jukebox" makes music, it encourages movement, dancing. And in the same way, Jürgen Paas' pictures call for movement.
