Carl Fahringer

Biography

Carl Fahringer was born in Wiener Neustadt in 1874 and studied for six years at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts with Siegfried l'Allemand, Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger. In 1898 he moved to the Munich Academy to study with Carl Marr.
Influenced by the Munich School of the late 19th century, he developed his distinctive late Impressionist-Expressionist style. From 1903 to 1905 Fahringer was a member of the Hagenbund, and from 1907 of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Even before the First World War he embarked on extensive study trips that took him to France, Italy, the Balkans, Asia Minor and Egypt. During the war he was stationed as a war painter in Russia and Italy. In 1922 and 1929 he visited Java, Sumatra and Bali. These trips can be seen as a turning point in his work. From then on, Fahringer used a much more intensely colored palette with brighter, stronger tones. Port and market scenes became his favorite subjects, along with depictions of animals. From 1929 to 1945 Fahringer taught at the Vienna Academy. He died in Vienna in 1952.
