Josef Mikl. Zum Deckenbild des großen Redoutensaales der Wiener Hofburg. 1994-1996, Wien 1996, ill 88
The work "Astralagus with Landscape", flaming in characteristic orange-red, is a virtuoso homage to Ferdinand Raimund, the poet of the Vormärz period whom he so admired. And again and again, also in the artist's later paintings, human interaction and communication play an essential role. The intensity of the depiction of the three works is powerful and stirring, the various narratives immediately captivate the viewer and are evidence of Josef Mikl's great painterly genius. The artist leaves here fascinating examples of his uncompromising and very intellectual oeuvre, which is unique in the Austrian, indeed international art scene. He found his very own way into abstraction, which, however, never let him completely leave the ground of the representational.
